Foreigners can get clearance to enter their household goods duty free into Uruguay once they have permanent residency. If they have applied for residency, but the permit is not ready, they can still ship their goods but will have to leave a guarantee with customs. The packing list must be visaed by the Uruguayan Consulate at the originating country.
The following items can be imported duty free:
• Household goods, either new or used, in logical quantities
• Antiques and pieces of art: If the number is considered exaggerated for the household by the authorities, payment of duties may apply.
• Jewellery and coins made of precious metals: as long as quantities are reasonable
• Household appliances
• Electrical appliances: Only one article per kind, except TV sets, DVD and PC, which can be one article per family member
• Bicycles: One per family member
Wine and alcohol are subject to duty.
Only sports guns are allowed to be imported, and the bearer must present a certificate from the ministry of defence.
Medicines, narcotics, drugs and plants cannot be brought with household goods.
Pets can be brought in but they must present a health and vaccination certificate legalized by the Uruguayan Consulate at origin.
Bringing in your vehicle.
Used cars cannot be brought in unless importers are diplomats. Foreigners can import new brand new vehicles (only mileage from shop to home allowed) paying approximately 93% of CIF value determined by Uruguayan customs, and not by the purchase invoice. You will need to present a commercial invoice, with an official translation into Spanish, and these documents must be legalized at the Uruguayan consulate at origin.
Temporary admission of your car may be granted for up to 18 months, after which the vehicle must be re exported. A bank guarantee may be needed, which will be returned after the export of the vehicle.
